Its games combine turn-based strategy and resource management on a Risk-like map, with real-time tactical control of battles. As of 2004, there are three games in the Total War series. The first two have established an apparent pattern: both have an expansion pack with Invasion in the title, and a compilation of the original game and expansion. * Shogun: Total War is set in feudal Japan. The expansion pack is called Mongol Invasion, released with the original in the Warlord Edition. * Medieval: Total War is set in medieval Europe. The expansion pack is Viking Invasion, and the combined edition is called the Battle Collection. * Rome: Total War (2004) is set in the Imperial Roman era of Europe. No expansion is yet available.
